What is Soundproofing, Acoustics and where do I buy?
In understanding Soundproofing and Acoustics first we need to define them itself. Firstly there is a massive misconception and misue of the word Acoustics when using it in the context of noise control. For many people and noise consultants the word acoustics is used to lable allmost every aspect of Noise Contro. Such as Acoustic Doors, Acoustic Walls for example.
The correct usage is that Acoustics is used in to describe problems within an area or room that deals with noise. If a room is said to have bad Acoustic properties it could have problem characteristics such as echo, reverberation, negative feed back when using microphone, amplification to name a few. These problems all are classified under Acoustic Control.
Noise Pollution or Soundproofing is used when describing Noise Problems. This Noise Pollution typically is when an individual or defined area is being subjected to Sound that is caused from an external source such as Airborne, Impact and Vibration Noise.
Airborne Noise relates to Sound that is transmitted in the free space such as vocal noise of people talking, shouting, babies screaming, T.V. Noise, and Music Noise. This Noise is transmitted from the source and passes through near by surroundings that are not treated with soundproofing or lack the necessary make-up that would act as a good sound barrier or absorber.
Many companies on the market are suggesting the use of foam as a stand alone soundproofing product used to create a soundproofing barrier and stop noise. This simply does not work. Foam based products are used for the treatment of Acoustic and can never result in a highly effective way at stopping Noise. This results in the fact that foam after all is a flexible material with its molecular composition encompassing loose thread. Thus the molecules are spread apart and sound can pass through them. In order for the product to stop Noise it would no longer have the characteristics of a form.
Impact Noise is the noise created from footsteps, children jumping, doors slamming, kitchen pots, pans hitting the wall, Noise from beds, chairs scraping and other not mentioned. This Noise requires the heavy soundproofing treatment in order to dampen the noise. This is caused because the Noise has actually been transmitted from source and is much more difficult to treat once this takes place; Impact Noise has a lot more energy than Airborne or vibration.
Vibration Noise is the noise typically created by bass frequency ’s of speakers, washing machines, Mass Rail Transit, Busses and other such vehicles for vibration transmission. The treatment of this type of Noise Pollution requires a different method due to the need for the dampening of the vibration and absorption required. There are many arguments for the use in aluminium sheeting used. It is our opinion that the use of aluminium sheeting for anti-vibration is not as effective then our Vdamp product that is created from a triple layer polymer. We believe that the idea of using aluminium would actually allow the noise to vibrate even more if in direct contact with the already vibrating surface.
Now that you understand the differences between Acoustics and Soundproofing you can appreciate that soundproofing is the type of method you need to be looking for when stopping noise. Thus Acoustics is what you are looking to use when creating a recording studio, cinema
or concert hall.
The next problems you will encounter is what is Soundproofing and how will I know what I am buying?
This is very difficult to define easily. Soundproofing materials can vary greatly from concrete with screed treatment to sand to plastics to silicone and of course mineral glass fibre.
Firstly let ’s talk about Mineral Glass Fibre. Mineral Glass Fibre has been manufactured over the years by many companies and given many names, Rockwood, gyprock, Soundwool, glass wool, Dense Fibre Block etc.
This product was first designed and used in the United Kingdom as a thermal based product used in roof and loft insulation. It was used for its heat retention properties typically at densities from 5kg to as much as 60kg. The material it self is classed as a non-carsogenic that means that it does not cause cancer. However when dealing with the product it is important to note that the product contains small glass particles and the inhaling of these particles can not be good for your lungs, we advice using protective mask when dealing with the products to be on the safe side.
Later in its life it was said to be discovered in the country of Wales in south part of the United Kingdom that a welsh farmer had been working on a barn conversion and was worried about heat loss so used a 3 layer very low density system and found that the as well as keeping the heat in the Noise from outside traffic had been greatly reduced.
This breakthrough leaded to high density versions being created and more creative methods of creating better tightly woven threads for even higher density. It’s very difficult to say exactly how it will perform in the field from the lab but having its test data means you know it works. Live test also are important, did other customers say that it worked what was the overall reduction from 0% to 100%.
